Coaching Terms for Families with AD/HD

A

ADA - The Americans with Disabilities Act

ADD - Term used for Attention Deficit Disorder, can be used to describe the disorder with or without hyperactivity. See Frequently Asked Questions for more information.

ADDA - National Attention Deficit Disorder Association

AD/HD - Term used for Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity.

C

CHADD - Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder. Organization supplies information, support, and advocacy.

Coaching - This has gained popularity in managing ADD; coaches provide support, encouragement and help in daily living skills.

D

Development - General term for cognitive, emotional, and physical growth.

F

Frustration Tolerance-The ability of a child to continue on a task through setbacks and difficulties.

H

Hyperactivity - Constant movement and excessive energy.

Hypersensitivity - Some individuals with AD/HD report a heightened sensory awareness. This is being highly sensitive to touch, smell and other sensory stimulus.  Can also be called Tactile Defensiveness.

I

Impulsivity - The inability to control behavior. This is a major symptom of AD/HD.

Inattention - A major symptom of ADD, either the inability or the appearance of inability to pay attention and focus on a task.

Learning Style - A particular way in which an individual learns. Examples include:  Physical, Mathematical, Visual, and Linguistic.

N

NAMI - National Alliance on Mental Health

NICHCY - The National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities

NIMH - National Institute of Mental Health

Normal - A range of behavior that society considers acceptable.

O

Off Task-Term for when a student is distracted and not keeping on task.

On Task-Term for when a student is continuing to focus on the lesson.

P

Psychiatrist - Mental health professionals who have undergone residency and have earned the M.D. degree. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication.

Psychologist - Mental health professionals who have earned a doctoral degree in Psychology (PhD or Psy.D) and have undergone clinical training. In most states, Psychologists cannot prescribe medication.

S

Self-Advocacy - The act of providing advocacy for yourself.

Support Group - A group of people offering support, compassion, and understanding to each other.
